The Notre Dame basketball team has already secured a commitment from one of the top players in St. Louis for the 2012 class and the Irish are looking to The Gateway Of The West for a prospect in the Class of 2013.
Cardinal Ritter High School junior Cameron Biedscheid is committed to the Irish while Nolan Berry from De Smet Jesuit High School is going to be in South Bend this week. The 6-foot-8, 195-pound sophomore forward is making an Indiana tour this week, checking out Purdue on Wednesday before heading to Notre Dame and Butler.
Berry, who averaged 19 points and seven rebounds last season, already has an offer from St. Louis University and has been told one is waiting for him in West Lafayette. He’s also getting interest from Notre Dame, Butler, Missouri and Illinois.
“I really like the Indiana schools, how they play,” the sophomore said. “I just really want to get up there and look at their campuses.”
Berry has been to Purdue for camp in the past, but this week’s trips will be his first chance to evaluate colleges as a recruit. His knowledge of Notre Dame as a school and a basketball program is sure to increase.
“I don’t actually know that much,” he said of Notre Dame. “I know about their team. I watched them play a lot, they were one of my favorite teams this year. All I basically know about them is the way they play.
“I really like the way they run their offense. They’re all big guys, but they’re all good players. They’re not just going to post up and try to bang with people. That’s the way I like to play.”
The skilled big man believes his strengths could fit well with the Irish.
“I think I run the floor real well,” he said. “I like to get out in transition. I’m a good shooter, if you leave me open. In the post, I’m not going to get real physical, but I have post moves and stuff like that.”
Berry doesn’t expect to be making a decision anytime soon and doesn’t have a list of leaders. “As of right now, I have no idea.”
He does have an idea of what he’ll be looking for in a school.
“First off, I’m looking for a good school academically,” he said. “Notre Dame and all of those schools are pretty good academics schools. For basketball, just a good team that has a winning history and definitely a good coach.”
Berry led De Smet to a 23-7 record and a trip to the Missouri Class 5 state quarterfinals.
