Hot-Shooting Irish Pound Marquette

EricAtkinsMarq1NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The first 30 minutes of this afternoon’s Notre Dame/Marquette was a matchup of two scrappy, undersized ball teams that played each other almost even. During the final 10 minutes of the game the red hot Fighting Irish buried Marquette, announcing to the college basketball world that they are legitimate force to be reckoned with.

Notre Dame used a 20-5 second half run to bury the No. 15 ranked Golden Eagles 76-59, giving the Irish three wins against ranked opponents in their last four contests.

Notre Dame came out of the locker room cold, making just five of its first 17 field goal attempts. The Irish shooters were just 1-of-5 from behind the arc as Marquette took a 16-12 lead midway through the opening half of the game.

Marquette senior guard Darius Johnson-Odom fueled the early Golden Eagle run, scoring eight points and hitting his first three shots.

2012 Recruiting: How Did We Get Here? RB

WillMahoneEdit6Running back was a position of need for Notre Dame in the Class of 2012. Not only did the Irish need a good one, they needed two good ones.

Notre Dame targeted several of the country’s top backs early in the process and put a great deal of effort into the position, but the Irish entered the fall without a commitment from any. And had it not been for a chance meeting between two recruits at a Penn State camp, Notre Dame might have gone even longer without a back signed up.

Ohio’s Will Mahone planned on visiting Notre Dame during a summer tour, but after driving to Michigan State and then Penn State, Mahone and his mother were exhausted and ready to cancel the stop in South Bend. Then Mahone talked with Armani Reeves.

Offer On The Way For 2013 OT?

ColinMcGovern1As the focus has now shifted to the 2013 class, one area the Irish coaching staff will be looking to concentrate on is along the offensive line.

Notre Dame is off to a good start on the offensive line with the commitment of Michigan offensive tackle Steve Elmer. The Irish have already offered many other top prospects along the offensive line, especially throughout the Midwest, which is loaded with talent in 2013.

The coaching staff may be in the midst of offering another top Midwestern prospect; Colin McGovern of Lincoln Way-West High in New Lenox, Ill.

The 6-foot-6, 285-pound lineman has already received offers from Michigan, Tennessee, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Illinois, Northwestern and Indiana. Notre Dame, Ohio State, Purdue, Iowa and Penn State have all shown interest, but have yet to extend an offer.

McGovern hadn't been in contact with the Irish coaching staff, but that changed this past week.

"Coach (Chuck) Martin called my head coach and told him to have me give him a call," he said. "He (Martin) let me know that they were very interested in me and they like my highlights, but they needed to see my transcripts before they offer. We also talked about what Notre Dame has to offer and what's expected of the student-athletes at Notre Dame."

The Illinois prospect was told that if his transcripts check out, an offer from Notre Dame will be on the way.

"As long as my transcripts look good, I'll have an offer," he explained. "I take my academics very serious, so I think I'll be alright. My coach just sent transcripts out (Thursday), but I know Notre Dame's coaches are on a four-day weekend. I'm guessing I should hear back sometime next week since they're having a long weekend."

If the Irish offer, where would they stand on McGovern's list of schools?

"It's still very early, so I don't have any favorites," he stated. "I'm just looking for the best opportunity for me, I never had a favorite team growing up, so I'm wide open. I know Notre Dame is a great school and I'd be honored to get an offer from such a prestigious academic school."

McGovern hasn't taken a visit to Notre Dame as a prospect, but he has made several trips to campus.

"I went to a game there against Syracuse in 2005 and I went another time to just walk around with my family a year or two later," he described. "I really like the campus and the scenery of it. I was pretty young the last time I went there, it'd be nice to see the campus again."

The coveted prospect has already made plans to visit South Bend in the next couple of months.

"Coach Martin told me about their Junior Day at the end of March, I think I'm going to get out there for that," said McGovern. "Hopefully when I go up there I have an offer."

While the 2013 class is just starting to take center stage on the recruiting front, McGovern already has an idea of how he like his recruitment to play out.

"Ideally, I'd like to have a decision made before my senior season," he explained. "I won't rush to a decision, but it would be nice to have it out of the way before my senior year starts. If not, I'll make a decision whenever it feels right."

PatConnaughtonMarq1NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Resurgent, resilient…resounding. However you want to describe the Notre Dame men’s basketball team, they found a way to win a fourth straight game by pulling away from No. 15 Marquette 76-59 on Saturday at Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center.

This team that many left for dead after a Dec. 17 loss to Indiana added another crucial win to its NCAA Tournament resume while improving to 15-8 overall and an amazing 7-3 in Big East Conference play.

“I tell you one thing, we got one heck of a strong resume,” Brey said proudly after the game. “Our resume is very strong with what we’ve done.”

“You know, and it’s exciting to think about…that that’s possible for this team after where we were, but I think our guys are very focused on showing-up on selection Sunday. God bless ‘em they should be, because they have put us in this position with their kind of focus and businesslike approach to go get it.”

BuzzWilliamsMarq1Notre Dame faces another stiff test this afternoon as it looks to continue to build up its NCAA Tournament resume. The Irish will look to extend their winning streak to four games. In order to do that they will have to beat one of the hottest teams in the country. Buzz Williams and the No. 15 Marquette Golden Eagles (19-4 overall, 8-2 Big East) will look to win their eighth game in a row in hopes of staying right in the thick of the race for the top spot in the conference.

Marquette dropped two of its first three conference games and four of six overall during a rough three week period that stretched from December 19 to January 7. After back-to-back road losses to Georgetown (73-70) and Syracuse (73-66) the Golden Eagles got hot. They pounded St. John’s (83-64) and No. 21 Louisville (74-63) en route to seven straight wins, putting them just a game behind Syracuse at 8-2 in Big East play.

The Golden Eagles are one of the top scoring teams in the conference, ranking second in the Big East at 76.1 points per game. Marquette is an aggressive offensive team that excels at getting to and converting from the free throw line. Marquette leads the conference in free throw attempts and ranked second with a 71.1-percent conversion rate from the line. The Golden Eagles also move the ball extremely well on the offensive end, leading the conference with 17.4 assists per game.
