Sharpley served as Clausen's backup in 2008 and only appeared in two brief appearances, but he was invaluable in helping Crist learn the offense. Missed spring ball to concentrate on baseball and did not intend to return for his fifth season until the end of the season. He will serve as the third-string quarterback in 2009.
