The NCAA released a report discussing the graduation rates among football teams that will be playing in bowl games this season. Richard Lapchick, director of TIDES, was the primary author of the study.
In the study it was revealed that football graduation rates improved from 67-percent to 68-percent, while 97-percent of the schools participating in bowl games had at least a 50-percent graduation rate among its football players.
An interesting note in the study was the continued gap between white and black athletes. The Graduation Success Rate (GSR) among white athletes went up from 80-percent to 81-percent. The GSR for black athletes went up from 60-percent to 61-percent, a 20-percent gap between white and black athletes. The study also revealed that “26-percent of the bowl-bound schools (18 out of 70) graduated less than half of their African-American football student-athletes, while no schools graduated less than half of its white football student-athletes.”

“While the study showed that the graduation rates improved for both white and African-American football student-athletes, the study also showed that the alarming gap between white and African-American football student-athletes remained virtually the same this year and persists as a major issue.”
He continued:
“It must be emphasized that African-American and white football players graduate at a higher rate than their male non-athletic peers in the student body. The graduation rate for African-American male students as a whole is only 40-percent, in comparison to the 60-percent graduation rate for white male students, according to a 2010 article in The Chronicle of Higher Education.”
Only Notre Dame (7-percent) and North Carolina (23-percent) had GSR’s for black football student-athletes that exceeded their rates for white football student-athletes. The report states that number is down from five in the 2010-2011 study.
Another interesting quote from Lapchick about Notre Dame:
“Notre Dame and Northwestern would have played for the National Championship if there was a national championship game for Graduation Success Rate among bowl teams. Both teams graduated at least 94-percent of all football student-athletes and at least 92-percent of African-American football student-athletes. Notre Dame graduated 100-percent of their African-American football student-athletes.”
