Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly announced on Saturday that senior linebacker Danny Spond was giving up football for medical reasons.
"It was an emotioonal decision and didn't come without a lot of thought," Kelly said.
Spond and his family would release a statement with more clarification soon, according to Kelly, who did add that Spond would stay with the Irish as a student coach to help Ben Councell and Jaylon Smith grow at the position.
The 6-foot-2, 250-pounder from Littleton, Colo., was part of Kelly's first recruiting class in South Bend. He played in eight games as a freshman, primarily on special teams. He played some linebacker as a sophomore, but most of his action in 10 games again came on special teams. As a junior in 2013, he started 11 games after sitting out the first two dealing with migraines.
Irish Sports Daily will have more on this story soon.
