With just days to go until the start of the 2013 football season, a member of the Notre Dame football team apparently plans to transfer. A source has confirmed to ISD that reserve safety Chris Badger plans to leave Notre Dame and will transfer to BYU as early as next week.
Badger, a Provo, UT native, originally came to Notre Dame as an early enrollee in January, 2010. He went through offseason practice with the Fighting Irish that spring, but left school after that semester to embark on an LDS Church Mission in Ecuador. He returned to the team last season, but never saw game action during the team's 12-1 campaign.
Badger was buried on the Fighting Irish depth chart this fall. Even after sophomore Nicky Baratti went down with a season-ending shoulder injury, Badger saw minimal reps during fall training camp. Matthias Farley and Austin Collinsworth are each expected to start at safety when the Irish host Temple this weekend. Sophomore Elijah Shumate and junior Eilar Hardy are the likely next two men in at the position, with true freshman Max Redfield and sophomore John Turner both ahead of Badger on the depth chart.
