Notre Dame, Indiana, Purdue and Butler will meet at the state capital on Monday to sign an agreement for an inaugural event that will feature a doubleheader between the four top basketball programs in the state.
The matchups for the event, which will begin in 2011 at Indianapolis’ Conseco Fieldhouse, will also be announced on Monday.
The South Bend Tribune’s Tom Noie has reported that the doubleheader will take place in December of 2011, adding another tough game to a non-league schedule that already includes dates with Gonzaga and Maryland. The Irish will also take place in the O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic in Kansas City, (Mo.) that season.
The athletics directors for all four schools will be in Indianapolis on Monday.
Earlier this week, Indiana athletics director Fred Glass told the Herald-Times he was happy to be involved in something he felt was long overdue.
“We thought it might make sense to resurrect what had been a pretty cool doubleheader with what I think most people would acknowledge are the four premier programs in the state,” Glass said.
Since Purdue and Indiana are both in the Big Ten, they cannot meet in the event. The Boilermakers and Hoosiers would likely flip-flop between games against the Irish and the Bulldogs, meaning Notre Dame would not face Butler.
