Purdue head coach Danny Hope held his first radio show of the season on Monday night and Lafayette (Ind.) Journal and Courier beat writer Mike Carmin sent out some outtakes via Twitter.
When asked about concerns heading into the opener against the Irish, Hope said, “Being young in the secondary.”
Hope knows that the defensive backfield "will be tested" by Brian Kelly’s spread offense and the Boilermakers are planning to "roll guys in and out" on defense to try to keep up with the pace.
The Purdue head coach sounded more confident in his offensive unit, saying "I think we can score some points.”
Purdue running back Al-Terek McBurse, who tweaked his knee earlier in training camp is fine, according to Hope.
Look for freshman defensive tackle and former Notre Dame recruit Bruce Gaston to see action early, maybe even Saturday. Hope feels comfortable with his linebacker group, saying it is two-deep at all three spots. Hope credited quarterback Robert Marve with helping the Boilermakers develop “excellent team chemistry.”
On Marve, Hope said, “He doesn't wear down. Has a motor that runs non-stop.”
