Spencer Boyd’s visit to Notre Dame back in April for the Irish spring game nearly did it for him.
The Cape Coral (Fla.) High standout nearly ended his recruitment that weekend.
“I knew it was right, from the first time I went there,” the 5-foot-10, 175-pound Boyd said. “I just wanted to make sure that there wasn’t any other schools that would suit me even more. I wanted to make sure that was the most right school for me.”
After taking a couple months to figure that out, it turns out, Notre Dame is the right place for Boyd.
Boyd has a press conference scheduled at the Varsity Club in South Bend on Friday evening and will publicly offer his verbal commitment to the Irish, choosing Notre Dame over Michigan and Georgia.
“When I went there, I knew it was right anyways,” Boyd told Irish Sports Daily a couple weeks before his public announcement. “All the people I was surrounded by, coach (Corwin) Brown especially, he’s a great guy, sold me to the school. The coaching staff, they’re all real down to earth, and they’re all great guys, and they all seem like they can get me to the next level and help me be a better man.”
As a junior, Boyd only played in eight games because of an injury. He had 30 tackles, and used his 4.41 second speed in the 40-yard dash to return an interception 104 yards for a score. On offense, Boyd rushed for 620 yards on just 102 carries, with eight scores. He also had offers from the likes of Ole’ Miss, North Carolina, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Miami, Duke, South Florida and Central Florida.
Boyd becomes the 13th player to verbally commit to head coach Charlie Weis and Notre Dame in the class of 2010, and the second cornerback, joining Apopka (Fla.) High’s Lo Wood.
“I know a degree from Notre Dame, I can move back to Florida after I graduate and get a job down here and work down here. Going up to Notre Dame, there is no better place to prepare me to be a man. The four or five years there, I’m going to enjoy, and there is so much that comes out of it after I graduate.”
Boyd is also fired up to join a class that already has verbal commits from highly sought after defensive ends Chris Martin, Blake Lueders and Justin Utupo, as well as linebacker Kendall Moore, safety Chris Badger and Wood.
“I feel like we’re going to have one of the best defenses in the nation once we come up through the system, with the guys we already have coming in,” Boyd explained. “And who knows who else we’re going to get.
“I’m real excited about it, going up there with Lo, and I’ve been talking to Chris Martin a lot, and I’m pretty excited.”
Boyd’s parents are equally excited and proud.
“They’re real fired up. That’s kind of where they wanted me to go anyways because of the educational standpoint. My mom likes that fact, and my dad loves the prestige of Notre Dame and all that, so they’re real excited about it.”
Boyd says he’ll most likely take his official visit for the USC game.
