Through the fall and into the winter, Archbishop Cincinnati (Ohio) Moeller quarterback, and Notre Dame verbal commit Andrew Hendrix, will be writing a guest blog for Irish Sports Daily, chronicling his senior season, while also talking about anything else that comes his way.
Hello Notre Dame fans and welcome back to my blog!
It was a great week here in Cincinnati with great weather and great football. It was a week where we started school, and practiced in preparation for a showdown scrimmage with the Colerain Cardinals. I have never been so excited for a scrimmage in my entire football career and it truly felt like everything was on the line from the first tick to the last.
Starting out, the scrimmage was close, three-straight punts and both teams stalemating the other. Colerain got on the board first with a touchdown drive and a missed extra point, but Moeller responded with a drive of our own, ending with a 4th-and-goal play action touchdown pass to our tight end (a Ball State commit). The half ended with a 7-6 Crusaders victory, and the starters were shutdown, but I felt like I had much unfinished business to take care of.
I left the game with a very empty feeling inside. I made some mistakes, we all did, but given another half I felt incredibly comfortable with what we would accomplish and would love to have seen what our much bigger, much more conditioned team was capable of. My mistakes were mental, a wrong read here, a missed check here, and I can and will learn from them. My goal was to make few physical mistakes, and I believe I accomplished this goal. If I can continue to learn the game and continue to become more mentally consistent, then my physical tools can help me take over the game like I know I am capable of doing. I am almost there, and I am working nonstop to get to this point.
When I do get to this point, I think our team will be virtually unbeatable, on any level that I play. This is not to be taken as a boastful comment, just something that keeps me motivated and lets me know where I can be if I put my everything into it. This upcoming week is our first game of the season, versus a team very similar to Colerain in Winton Woods. This is a team that is fast, runs the triple option, and tries to use their athletes to beat you. They will play cover one or zero (man to man) and make you beat them with precise throws.
This week will test the physical side of my game as much as it will the mental. There will be times when they’re backers will break through our line but I need to stay in and throw the ball anyway. This is a great way to start our season and I could not be more excited for the start of my senior season!
I set my visits to Notre Dame this week. I am visiting for the Nevada game, and USC game, with my official visit set for the team banquet in the beginning of December towards the end of the season. Those will be two great games and Notre Dame Stadium should be rockin! I have never been to a game before, so this will be my first experience in South Bend during a game as well! If any of you see me and recognize me, come up and say hello I would love to meet you! Thanks again and hopefully see you again next week! Go Irish!
