It still has a long way to go, but Nolan Berry’s recruitment moved forward last week as the 6-foot-8, 195-pound sophomore forward from St. Louis (De Smet Jesuit High School) toured three Indiana universities.

“They were all good,” Berry said.

On Wednesday, Berry made the trip to Purdue, where the Boilermakers made good on their promise of extending a scholarship offer.

“Purdue was really nice,” the 2013 prospect said. “The facilities were great up there. They’re doing all of those renovations and it looks really nice.

“The coaches were great. I got to meet the whole coaching staff. They drew up where I’d be playing in their offense…They’ve got me playing a four, but with their offense, everyone is spread out and facing the basket.”

On Thursday, Berry swung up to South Bend to check out Notre Dame.

“It was really cool too,” Berry said of Notre Dame. “The campus was awesome up there. With Notre Dame, you could tell they focus on academics first. It was a really cool school. You’re not just in a dorm with other basketball guys. It was a really cool school.

“The coaches were great there too. Most of the time it was raining, but I got to walk around with (assistant coach Martin) Inglesby and I sat down with Coach (Mike) Brey. I had a nice talk with him, so that was pretty good.”

The Irish didn’t get into specific Xs and Os or potential positions with Berry as much.

“They see me fitting in, not as much at which position, but based on how I play, they see me fitting in up there,” Berry said.

But the Irish still need to see more before they offer, in fact, Brey needs to see Berry.

“Notre Dame didn’t say anything (about offering) because the coach still hadn’t seen me play,” Berry said. “He was just talking about how excited he was to see me play.

“They said they’re going to be watching me playing AAU, but they want me to come up, work out with those guys during football season and maybe see a football game.”

Then it was down to Indianapolis to see Butler before returning to Missouri.

“That was also really great,” Berry said of Butler. “I didn’t get to see the campus as much because it was raining there too. I got to sit with the coaching staff and I really like all of those guys.”

Berry got to visit with head coach Brad Stevens, whose popularity has skyrocketed after leading the Bulldogs to the NCAA title game in each of the last two seasons.

“It was exciting,” Berry said. “When you go up there, you think about all of these guys that you can’t even talk to, but they’re just normal people.”

Berry sees Butler as an emerging school whose recent success has caught has interest.

“You notice how they’ve been playing these last couple years,” Berry said. “The way they built their program and the direction they’re headed, it’s just really positive. It makes you think about that school more than you would have in the past.”

Berry said the facilities at Butler were older than Notre Dame and Purdue’s, but were still really nice. Butler let Berry know he’d be welcome to join the Bulldogs.

“Butler said they have a scholarship for me, but they can’t offer it until after your sophomore year,” Berry said. “It’s a rule at Butler.”

Berry doesn’t have any other visits planned right now and it’s still too early for him to formulate a list of leaders.

“They’re all pretty even right now,” he said. “I like all three of the schools.”
