As the Notre Dame basketball program awaits Kansas four-star forward Eric Katenda’s announcement on Tuesday, the Irish picked up another player on Monday.

Garrick Sherman told Irish Sports Daily he is transferring from Michigan State to Notre Dame. The 6-foot-10 center will sit out the 2011-12 season before having two years of eligibility remaining. The Kenton, Ohio native visited Notre Dame two weeks ago and took a trip to Texas this past weekend before deciding.

Comfort played a major factor in his decision.

“I already had a relationship established with the coaching staff at Notre Dame,” Sherman said. “I just felt like that was the best fit for me.

“I feel like I’m going to be able to fit in great. They have great guys. Everybody on the team was great when I went and visited. I just feel like they’re guys I want to play with.”

Sherman averaged 7.2 minutes, 1.9 points and 1.6 rebounds as a freshman for the Spartans. This past season, he averaged 12.1 minutes, 3.1 points and 2.6 rebounds. Sherman chose not to comment on his reasons for leaving East Lansing, but did say he was close to selecting the Irish when he was coming out of Kenton High School two years ago.

“The real deciding factor was the fact that I wanted to play in the Big Ten, that’s why I went to Michigan State, but I’m excited I get a chance to go play for Coach (Mike) Brey now,” Sherman said. “They’re a good program, they’re going to develop people no matter what, but they’ve especially had success with transfers.”

Sherman also found reasons beyond the basketball program for selecting the Irish.

“If you graduate with a degree for Notre Dame, that’s special,” he said. “That’s definitely an added bonus, that’s just something else to add to the list of reasons to pick Notre Dame.”
