Bishop Dunne (Texas) defensive back Nick Watkins has made the call and decided Notre Dame is where he wants to be.
The 6-foot, 180-pound cornerback told Irish Sports Daily early on Friday morning that he was committing to Notre Dame and went ahead and made the call to Brian Kelly on Friday afternoon.
The Texas native has already visited Notre Dame twice, once back in the spring and most recently for the USC game, and admitted each visit caused him to fall in love with everything the Irish had to offer. He told ISD, "First of all, it's a school with a great tradition. You know every Saturday that stadium’s going to be packed and you're going to be on TV every week.
“To tell you the truth, I really like the gold helmets also, but it really seems like a great place and it seems like everybody gets along. From the outside, it feels like they have a real community up there and that definitely intrigues me.”
While Watkins' commitment to Notre Dame comes as no surprise, the timing of it does, especially after his most recent visit when he told ISD, “I'm probably still going to take a few more visits in November and then I hope to make a decision by December, so we'll just have to see what happens.”
It's certainly a welcomed surprise for the Irish and gives them their first defensive back commitment in the 2014 class.
The 6-foot, 180-pound cornerback chose the Irish over programs like Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M and UCLA.
Will have a lot more from Watkins fairly soon.
