When Mentor High (Mentor, Ohio) defensive end Tom Strobel began his football journey at a young age, he had high hopes for the experience, but not but not for the game itself.

“I started playing football when I was in second grade,” said Strobel. “To be totally honest, the only reason I started playing was because my best friend was playing at the time. He was always playing football, and I really wasn’t too familiar with it myself. I had joined up hoping to be on his team, but I ended up being on the other team.”

With the dreams of playing with his best friend dashed, Strobel was on his own, and his coach wasn't too keen on having the youngster on this team because of his age.

“My dad called the coach, and the coach was like, ‘Oh great, another second-grader,’” said the Ohio standout. “He was like all depressed because of that, but my dad said, ‘Oh no, just wait until you see him.’ I don't remember how big I was at the time, but I know I was like 110 pounds and was huge as a second-grader. After he heard about my size the coach was like, ‘Oh yes, this is going to be great.’ I ended up being like the biggest guy on the team, and now he's one of my high school coaches.
