James Brooks has had a close look at the recruitment of P.J. Harris, and South Lake High School’s (Groveland, Fla.) other wide receiver is seeing his own recruitment heat up.
Harris holds offers from Boston College, Duke, Iowa State, Memphis, South Carolina and Washington State while the 5-foot-10, 195-pound Brooks has an offer from Kent State and is looking for more.
South Lake had coaches from multiple BCS programs visit last week, including Notre Dame.
“After Notre Dame came in, not even an hour later, Tennessee came in and Washington State came in,” said Brooks, who’s also received interest from Memphis and Florida.
“It feels good. You have to keep your head straight. Being around P.J. and seeing him go through the recruiting process has been fun to watch and it’s good to see it start picking up for myself.”
Irish assistant Tony Alford represented Notre Dame and spoke with the coaches about Brooks among other South Lake standouts.
“I want to play slot and I guess they’re looking for slots, so that made me feel good about it,” Brooks said. “He told my coach they’re going to take a good look at my film and then go from there.”
Brooks believes his combination of speed and strength can cause mismatches when he’s in the slot.
“I know the linebackers will have a hard time covering me,” he said. “I think that’s something I can bring to the team. I wouldn’t mind running a little Wildcat because I have a pretty good arm. I want to be exploited. All of the talents I have, I want to be able to bring to the table. I don’t want to hold anything back. I just want to help the team win.”
Brooks caught 10 touchdown passes as a junior while also running for another and throwing for another. His fastest 40-time was the 4.4 he ran at the Under Armour Junior Combine in January.
“My coach has been doing a lot of speed training with me,” he said. “That’s something we’re going to try to get consistently in the 4.4s.”
Brooks will be looking at each school’s academics first and is hoping to major in computer science.
“I want to be at a place that can support that,” he said. “If not, I want to be at a place where I can work with kids. I want to be able to work with young kids and get to them early and keep them on the right path.
“Of course, I’d like opportunities to get a shot at the slot, but I’d be open to coaching and playing a position they feel I fit best at.”
Brooks will have no problem leaving the Sunshine State for college if it’s the right fit.
“As long as I’m out there doing the right thing and my mom knows I’m getting a good education, doing what I have to do and making the best, I’m pretty sure she’ll be happy with it,” he said.
Brooks is considering attending Notre Dame’s one-day camp next month and could perform at camps at Tennessee, Florida State and Miami as well. He has already been hearing about Notre Dame from one of his coaches.
“He always stories about Coach Holtz,” Brooks said of the South Lake assistant. “He’s been telling me about the legacy of Notre Dame. He said that’s one of the premier programs. They’re like a dynasty. The stories from there, they go back. He told me if a kid was to get an offer from there, they should take it. If I was to get an offer from there, that would really boost me up.”
With only one offer to date, Brooks is in no hurry to make a decision.
“I want to take it slow, figure out who’s going to give me the best opportunity and the team that stands out the most is the team I’ll be going to.”
