Mike Moore has maintained his recruitment will eventually come down to Virginia against one other school, but before he gets down to his top two, the defensive end/linebacker from Hyattsville, Md., will pick a final five.

“I’m trying to get it together soon,” the 6-foot-4, 255-pound Moore said. “I’m probably going to have it after this weekend or another week.”

It won’t be easy for the DeMatha star to get his list of almost 30 offers down to five, but he already has a good idea of some schools that are likely to make the cut. Virginia is assured to be included in his top five and not just because his father is an assistant coach with the Cavaliers.

“Virginia is going to be in it just because I know the tradition there, I know the players that have played there,” Moore said. “I know them personally because I’ve been there since I was a kid. I know that they also help people at my position to get to the league, which is a big thing for me because I want to be able to do that one day. Also, they have a great family atmosphere there, which I know about because I’ve been there so much as a kid.”

Moore said he believes Notre Dame will also make the cut.

“The great tradition they have there and the coaching staff,” said Moore, who visited South Bend for the Irish’s Junior Day in February and plans to make another trip to Notre Dame this summer. “I really enjoy the people that are recruiting me there. Coach (Kerry) Cooks is a real cool guy.

“One of the best things about Notre Dame is that after you graduate from there, you’re basically set for life, which I really like. I talked to Ronald Darby about it. He talks to me every now and then, just telling me, ‘Remember life after football, just in case football doesn’t work out. If you go to Notre Dame, you’re basically set for life,’ at least that’s what he’s telling me.”

Moore will take another trip to Florida this weekend and said the Gators will also probably be included in his top five.

“With them, it’s just a big-time program,” Moore said of the SEC power. “They’re in need of defensive ends, so it’d give me a good chance to come in and play early, which is what they’re telling me. They said they’re going to give me all of the tools and all of the opportunities to come in there and start.

Moore isn’t really sure what other schools will make the list.

“Right now, I’m just trying to figure out what the other two schools are,” he said. “I’m starting to cut out some schools.”

It could be even more difficult for Moore to get his list from five to two.

“I’m just going to try to figure out what separates each school from the others,“ he said of his final cut. “I couldn’t say when, but I know it’ll be some time in the summer.”

That’s in line with his timetable for announcing a commitment.

“I want to be able to make my decision before the season starts.”
