Notre Dame assistant Mike Elston stopped by Havelock High School in Havelock, N.C. on Thursday to get a look at 2014 running back Derrell Scott.

“Coach Elston came by the school,” Havelock head coach Jim Bob Bryant said. “He said they really liked his film. They just wanted to eyeball him. He was walking by and he saw him.

“When he saw he was 5-10.5 and 185 pounds, they went ahead and offered him.”

Notre Dame joins a lengthy early list that already includes schools like North Carolina, North Carolina State, Duke, South Carolina, Tennessee, Maryland, Florida State and Georgia Tech among others.

“His ability to make people miss, his speed, his power,” Bryant said when asked what makes Scott special. “He’s the total package.

“He has a 3.6 GPA, 4.4 in the 40, 35-inch vertical jump. He’s just a tremendous athlete and a hard worker.”

Even with all of the other offers, Scott was fired up to add the Irish to the list.

“He was real excited about it,” his coach said. “He knows Notre Dame has a strong tradition in football. Hopefully we’ll be able to get him out to one of their camps this summer so he can see the campus.”

Scott has already hit some of the local schools.

“He’s visited Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State, East Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee,” said Bryant.

He expects to hit some more in the coming months.

“He’ll try to do some one-day camps and stuff this summer.”

ISD will have more with Scott and his offer from the Irish soon.
