It’s still a bit early, but Frank Buncom IV is already attracting offers and interest from some of the top schools in the country.
The 2015 California athlete has three offers.
“I have unofficial offers - I call them unofficial offers because they came through my coach – from UCLA and UNLV,” Buncom IV said. “I’ve talked to Coach (Steve) Sarkisian and the University of Washington has officially offered me.”
He’s also receiving interest from schools like Notre Dame, USC, Alabama, Oregon and Stanford. Irish assistant Bob Elliott made a pair of stops at St. Augustine High School in San Diego during the May Evaluation period.
“Coach Bob Elliott came by my school twice, once during school and then he came to one of my early-morning practices,” Buncom IV said.
“He was telling me that Notre Dame has really high interest in me and about me being able to play multiple positions and that I’ll continue to be recruited by Notre Dame.”
Buncom IV could play cornerback, safety or receiver.
“I don’t have a preference,” he said. “Actually, my preference would be to play multiple positions.”
He definitely has the size to play the positions.
“Right now, I’m a legitimate 6-1,” he said. “Some people would say 6-2, but I’m legitimately 6-1 and 185 pounds. My fastest 40-time is 4.66.”
He’s been told he has the athleticism to play on an island.
“I’m a really versatile player,” Buncom IV said. “For my height, I have really quick feet and I have long limbs, so they really like my length. At cornerback, they say I have the footspeed to laterally move with receivers and they like my length and physicality.
And he knows he’s physical enough to play safety.
“That’s what I make my living on,” he said. “I started my freshman and sophomore year at cornerback and every time they ran to my side, it was a big hit. It wasn’t happening.”
Buncom IV feels blessed to have the offers he has already.
“It feels good, but at the same time it’s humbling because you know you still have to work at it,” he said. “I really haven’t been looking at colleges, I really just want to win championships with my team right now.”
But he’s still looking for more.
“I’m supposed to be going to a camp at Stanford on July 26th and I’m supposed to be getting offered there at the camp,” he said. “They’ve shown a lot of interest. I’ve talked with Coach (David) Shaw and the defensive coordinator, Coach (Derek) Mason. I’ve talked with all of those guys and they possibly want me to play cornerback, wide receiver and safety.”
He has a few schools that are sticking out early, but isn’t limiting his options.
“As of right now, my top schools would be Stanford, Washington and UCLA,” he said. “I’m just trying to get all of my options and keep everything open.”
He’s visited UCLA and Cal already and is looking forward to checking out Washington.
“II really want to get up there and see the campus and talk to the coaches face-to-face,” he said.
At this point, Buncom IV doesn’t know much about Notre Dame.
“I just know the little bit that’s publicized, but I haven’t done any background research on them,” he said.
But as he goes through the process, South Bend could end up being a visit he makes,.
“That could be a possibility if they’re in my top five when senior year comes,” he said. “I’m going to take my five official visits to my top schools and they could definitely be one of the schools up there.”
Education will play a key role when Buncom IV ends up making his decision.
“One of the real critical things I’m going to be looking at in a school is academic prestige given that I have a 4.17 GPA,” he said. “I really like my grades and I want an academically prestigious school.
“I like competition, but I don’t think that’ll be a problem and my fit with the school and how I fit in with the program, whether they want me to play cornerback, safety, some sort of hybrid linebacker or wide receiver. How I fit in the program and if I see myself excelling in that position.”
