Bryce Treggs had a great summer on the 7-on-7 circuit and the 5-foot-10, 175-pound receiver from Bellflower, Calif., (St. John Bosco) had no problem carrying that over into his team’s first game.

“I had eight catches for 170 yards and a touchdown,” Treggs said of the Braves’ 27-0 win over San Diego Mission Hills last week.

Treggs acknowledged that his summer, which included stops in Texas, Oregon and Florida, helped prepare him for his senior season.

“The competition over my summer was very high - going to The Opening, Gridiron Kings and the 7-on-7 national championship,” he said. “The competition drops a little bit just going against players in California. I don’t mean to brag, but it’s a little bit easier than going against the top guys across the country.”

Treggs feels like a better player physically and also has more confidence after performing against the nation’s best.

“You go to The Opening and Gridiron Kings and you have to use all of your techniques and bring your A-game on every play,” he said. “When you go back to your high school, you use the same things and you’re successful.

“At The Opening, I did pretty good and that was against the top corners and safeties in the nation. Coming back, I have a little swagger about me now that I use on the field.”

Treggs feels like he needs to have that mindset as a highly-publicized national recruit.

“You have a reputation to uphold because everybody is gunning for you every week,” he said. “You have to bring your A-game every single game because you’re going to get triple-covered and you’re going to get their best. You have to be ready for that.”

Treggs committed to California, his father’s alma mater, while at The Opening, but isn’t sure when he’ll take an official visit to Berkeley.

“I plan on going there when all of the other big-time recruits are going,” he said.

He does know one of his official visits. He’ll be in South Bend on Oct. 22nd when Notre Dame plays USC.

“Definitely,” said Treggs, who will be joined by a couple of friends.

Treggs confirmed that fellow California recruits, Shaq Thompson and Ishmael Adams will be in South Bend that weekend as well.

Notre Dame has been pushing to stay involved with Treggs despite his commitment to the Golden Bears. Earlier this week, Irish West Coast recruiter Mike Denbrock got Treggs on the phone with wide receivers coach Tony Alford and offensive coordinator Charley Molnar.

“They were saying that they hope they’re still in the mix, which they are,” Treggs said. “That was my decision, it came down to Notre Dame and Cal, so Notre Dame is definitely still in the mix. They wanted to let me know that they’re still going to recruit me and that they still think I’m a great player.”

The attention the Irish staff has shown him certainly won’t hurt Notre Dame in its attempt to flip Treggs.

“It’s a big thing because it means they like me a lot and are very interested,” he said. “You want to go to a school that loves you and doesn’t just like you for a spot. I definitely feel that they need me rather than just wanting to have me.”

Other than Notre Dame and Cal, Treggs has no other officials planned at the moment.

“Those are the only two officials I’m going on for sure.”
