Mele's Big Board: Cornerback

nickwatkinsVery similar to safety, Notre Dame will have a lot of talent and depth at cornerback on the roster when the 2013 season begins. That being said, one lesson the Fighting Irish have learned in the past few years is that you can never have too many corners. I would have to believe Notre Dame will take at least two cornerbacks from the class of 2014 and there’s genuine interest from one of the prospects on my list.

KaiLocksley1It might not be a surprise that 2015 Gilman (Baltimore, Md.) athlete Kai Locksley has already started to receive some big-time interest from some the top football programs in the nation, but what is kind of shocking is that the offers he's received came after the 2012 season in which he played a brand-new role for the betterment of the team.

KendallHintonAs Notre Dame continues its search for quarterbacks in the Class of 2014, evaluating signal-callers in the 2015 class is already well under way.

The Irish already have a couple offers out to Midwestern quarterbacks like Jack Beneventi and Jayru Campbell, but are also looking at others, including North Carolina’s Kendall Hinton.

The 6-foot, 185-pounder from Southern High School in Durham already holds an offer from Duke and is receiving strong interest from others. Notre Dame assistant Mike Elston has already made a stop by Southern to check on Hindall and even compared his physical ability to Everett Golson.

KendrellMcFadden1It didn’t take Andrew Rhoden long to realize that Kendrell McFadden had special ability.

“He came to me as a quarterback, but he can’t throw at all, so we put him at safety,” the head coach of McArthur High School in Hollywood, Fla., laughed when referring to McFadden.

“He knocked out one of my best receivers in practice, a kid who was All-State. That’s when I knew, ‘OK, we have somebody who is definitely going to make an impact.’ He started as a true freshman.”

The 6-foot-4, 195-pound McFadden is just finishing his sophomore year at McArthur, but already has an amazing amount of offers to this point.

“59, I believe it is,” Rhoden said.

Recruiting Week in Review

CoreyHolmes3Notre Dame felt very good about their wide receiver recruiting class last year and hope to duplicate that success in the class of 2014. Head coach Brian Kelly has shown in his past that he can produce truly dynamic offenses when he has the necessary weapons. During his tenure at Notre Dame he has slowly been developing the kind of offensive firepower that will enable the Irish to be explosive at the skill positions. Notre Dame hopes to continue that trend in the class of 2014 recruiting class and they are off to a good start with verbal commitments at wide receiver and running back. Last week Irish Sports Daily reported on two Irish recruits at wide receiver that would be outstanding additions to the 2014 recruiting class and continue Notre Dame’s stockpiling of offensive weapons. What have you been missing by not being a member of Irish Sports Daily?

Derek Kief, WR, 6-5, 185, LaSalle High School, Cincinnati, OH recently released his top five and Notre Dame was in it. The four-star prospect included the Irish along with Ohio State, Alabama, Kentucky and Northwestern. The next step for the Irish coaching staff is getting him on campus and that will occur on June 22nd when he arrives in South Bend for a 7 on 7 passing tournament. That visit will be part of a larger tour of his favorite schools as well as other schools that have offered him a scholarship.
