Notre Dame fans had been waiting on this one for quite a while, mostly because his talent is so obvious. Dallas Golden‍ has been a top of the board recruit for Notre Dame for some time and the Irish coaching staff finally landed a commitment from him today.

A multi-position star on both sides of the ball, Golden has played running back, wide receiver, Wildcat quarterback, corner, and safety. He led Berkley Prep (Florida) to a state title while racking up 24 touchdowns on offense and five interceptions as a defensive back.

Notre Dame projects him to play cornerback, but he could realistically play multiple roles for the Irish.

Height: 6’1”

Weight: 180

Projected Position: Cornerback/safety

ISD Grade: 94 (4-star)

National Average Grade: 92.0 (4-star)

What he does best:

Golden has tremendous short area quickness. That really shows up on offense when he makes defenders miss in space, but also on defense with his ability to make plays on the football in man coverage like this.

He displays good recognition in coverage and that shows up mostly at safety, but also at corner like when he broke off his coverage to make a play against this screen.

He’s a great athlete with outstanding speed. If he does end up at safety, he’ll have the range to cover a ton of ground.

His ball skills are outstanding. He can high point the football as a receiver on offense and also tracks the ball well in coverage. Golden knows how to find the football.

He also has added value as a potential returner. He has dynamic potential when he gets his hands on the football.

What he needs to improve:

He hasn’t played a ton of corner because they’ve used him at so many different positions. He’ll have to make that transition at Notre Dame and there will be technical things he needs to build on.

That’s the biggest piece with him because he has the athleticism to play multiple positions and honing his skill set at corner will be the top priority. He’s been such a focal point on offense for Berkley Prep and he’ll need the reps on defense.

What’s his ceiling?

An extremely fluid athlete with great speed, Golden is a ball player who is talented enough to play on either side of the ball in college. It wouldn’t be all that surprising to see him ultimately end up at receiver.

Coaches are always going to value his traits on defense first, though. It’s very similar to former Notre Dame CB KeiVarae Russell, who was recruited to play offense, but his tools and the depth chart led him to playing corner.

Golden has the tools to develop into a chess piece who can excel in multiple roles. I see him lining up as a field corner or in the nickel for the Irish and I think he’s underrated as a national prospect.
